    Comparison between thermophysical and tribological properties of two engine lubricant additives: electrochemically exfoliated graphene and molybdenum disulfide nanoplatelets.

    Recently graphene and other 2D materials were suggested as nano additives to enhance the performance of nanolubricants and reducing friction and wear-related failures in moving mechanical parts. Nevertheless, to our knowledge there are no previous studies on electrochemical exfoliated nanomaterials as lubricant additives. In this work, engine oil-based nanolubricants were developed via two-steps method using two different 2D nanomaterials: a carbon-based nano additive, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and a sulphide nanomaterial, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoplatelets (MSNP). The influence of these nano additives on the thermophysical properties of the nanolubricants, such as viscosity index, density and wettability, was investigated. The unique features of the electrochemical exfoliated GNP and MSNP allow the formulation of nanolubricant with unusual thermophysical properties. Both the viscosity and density of the nanolubricants decreased by increasing the nanoplatelets loading. The effect of the nano additives loading and temperature on the tribological properties of nanolubricants was investigated using two different test configurations: reciprocating ball-on-plate and rotational ball-on-three-pins. The tribological specimens were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D profiler in order to evaluate the wear. The results showed significant improvement in the antifriction and anti-wear properties, for the 2D-materials-based nanolubricants as compared with the engine oil, using different contact conditions. For the reciprocal friction tests, maximum friction and worn area reductions of 20% and 22% were achieved for the concentrations of 0.10 wt% and 0.20 wt% GNP, respectively. Besides, the best anti-wear performance was found for the nanolubricant containing 0.05 wt% MSNP in rotational configuration test, with reductions of 42% and 60% in the scar width and depth, respectively, with respect to the engine oil

    The comparative responsiveness of Hospital Universitario Princesa Index and other composite indices for assessing rheumatoid arthritis activity

    Objective To evaluate the responsiveness in terms of correlation of the Hospital Universitario La Princesa Index (HUPI) comparatively to the traditional composite indices used to assess disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to compare the performance of HUPI-based response criteria with that of the EULAR response criteria. Methods Secondary data analysis from the following studies: ACT-RAY (clinical trial), PROAR (early RA cohort) and EMECAR (pre-biologic era long term RA cohort). Responsiveness was evaluated by: 1) comparing change from baseline (Delta) of HUPI with Delta in other scores by calculating correlation coefficients; 2) calculating standardised effect sizes. The accuracy of response by HUPI and by EULAR criteria was analyzed using linear regressions in which the dependent variable was change in global assessment by physician (Delta GDA-Phy). Results Delta HUPI correlation with change in all other indices ranged from 0.387 to 0.791); HUPI's standardized effect size was larger than those from the other indices in each database used. In ACT-RAY, depending on visit, between 65 and 80% of patients were equally classified by HUPI and EULAR response criteria. However, HUPI criteria were slightly more stringent, with higher percentage of patients classified as non-responder, especially at early visits. HUPI response criteria showed a slightly higher accuracy than EULAR response criteria when using Delta GDA-Phy as gold standard. Conclusion HUPI shows good responsiveness in terms of correlation in each studied scenario (clinical trial, early RA cohort, and established RA cohort).     Conceptual design of a novel CO2 capture process based on precipitating amino acid solvents

    Amino acid salt based solvents can be used for CO2 removal from flue gas in a conventional absorption-thermal desorption process. Recently, new process concepts have been developed based on the precipitation of the amino acid zwitterion species during the absorption of CO2. In this work, a new concept is introduced which requires the precipitation of the pure amino acid species and the partial recycle of the remaining supernatant to the absorption column. This induces a shift in the pH of the rich solution treated in the stripper column that has substantial energy benefits during CO 2 desorption. To describe and evaluate this concept, this work provides the conceptual design of a new process (DECAB Plus) based on a 4 M aqueous solution of potassium taurate. The design is supported by experimental data such as amino acid speciation, vapor-liquid equilibria of CO2 on potassium taurate solutions, and solid-liquid partition. The same conceptual design method has been used to evaluate a baseline case based on 5 M MEA. After thorough evaluation of the significant variables, the new DECAB Plus process can lower the specific reboiler energy for solvent regeneration by 35% compared to the MEA baseline. The specific reboiler energy is reduced from 3.7 GJ/tCO 2, which corresponds to the MEA baseline, to 2.4 GJ/tCO2, which corresponds to the DECAB Plus process described in this work, excluding the low-grade energy required to redissolve the precipitates formed during absorption. Although this low-grade energy will eventually reduce the overall energy savings, the evaluation of DECAB Plus has indicated the potential of this concept for postcombustion CO2 capture. © 2013 American Chemical Society

    12C+p resonant elastic scattering in the Maya active target

    International audienceIn a proof-of-principle measurement, the Maya active target detector was employed for a12C(p, p) resonant elastic scattering experiment in inverse kinematics. The excitation energy region from0 to 3MeV above the proton breakup threshold in 13N was investigated in a single measurement. Byusing the capability of the detector to localize the reaction vertex and record the tracks of the recoilingprotons, data covering a large solid angle could be utilized, at the same time keeping an energy resolutioncomparable with that of direct-kinematics measurements. The excitation spectrum in 13N was fitted usingthe R-matrix formalism. The level parameters extracted are in good agreement with previous studies. Theactive target proved its potential for the study of resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics withradioactive beams, when detection efficiency is of primary importance
